Sample Entry - Julie Strietelmeier's Space
Just to get things started, this is where I spend way too much time surfing, emailing, chatting and of course writing reviews. Here you see my PowerBook G4 perched on top of a LapVantage stand, Matias Apple keyboard, Bluetake mini BT500 Bluetooth mouse, Wiebetech Firewire ComboGB portable hard drive, 3G iPod, and my Sony CLIE TH-55 resting in a homemade LEGO stand. On the top shelf is my Direcway DW6000 satellite modem, Belkin 5 port switch, Canon Scanner, P1000 HP Photosmart printer and a Belkin WiFi access point balanced on top.

This is my setup at home. I'm looking toward moving house in a month or so and hope I don't end up stuck in the corner of the room again. On the desk is my Pocket PC, Smartphone, Laptop (on stand made from CD spindle), All-in-one printer jobbie, some general stuff and my highly prized Windows XP drinks mat. On the two middle shelves are essential cases, WiFi router, in case but wired up flip2disk, Lacie floppy drive, Bluetooth GPS and tools for taking apart stuff that I want to look in. On the bottom shelves there is a laptop bag with barely enough space for my laptop, file bag, CD folio, sunglasses, paper, spare batteries, CDRs, ink etc and a Climator laptop cooler for when I use my laptop in front of the TV. The heater on the right is for those nights when I'm the only person left awake and a bit cold. Finally in the drawer is a lot of cables I might need one day, various headphones and hands free kits and if I look really hard I might find a pen although I can't remember how to use them.

This is my workplace when I' am not at work or using one of my laptops (an IBM X-31 and Dell 8600) in the living room. I have 2 pc's. The left one is my main machine which I use for web browsing, e-mail, movies, games, programming and office applications. The right one I use for Virtual PC sessions. It's got a virtual Windows 2003 environment installed for my work. Also in the picture is my flight sim Hotas setup (a Thrustmaster Cougar setup for flight sims), joypad, ipaq 4350, 120 GB Freecom FHD-1 backup drive, TrackIR 2, Card reader and a 3Com WiFi Cable/DSL Gateway for internet sharing and synchronization for my two laptops, Toshiba e800 and iPAQ 4350. The TFT screen is used for both pc's. On the floor is a Compaq UPS which is coupled to both pc's and the TFT and my Creative Home Theatre speaker set. Not in the picture is my Freecom FHD-2 40 GB portable HD which I normally always take with me for backup. This picture was taken with my Canon EOS 300D (euro version of the Digital Rebel).

So this is where I spend most of my time... As a webdesigner/developer this is my home... Sorry 'bout the mess but it's been kinda hectic these last few days. From left to right... a Roland synth, my trusty P900, 2 homebuilt pc's, Linksys wifi router, 2 firewire 160gig HD, 1 Sony CRT, oldskool-style Cherry keyboard, MS IntelliMouse, Creative Labs Audigy2zs, an iPaq 3870, Gizmo (my Aibo ERS220, he does most of the work around here :-) ), Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse, iPod, 2 18.1 TFT's, Coffee!, my Acer 64bit portable workbeast. Not in this picture are a Canon Digital Rebel and some lenses, my girlfriends iPod, more Roland gear and my Compaq TC1000 tabletpc... Pic was shot with a Sony Cybershot U... I so love gadgets... ;-) Some of these gadgets need (new) bags so I hope I win the RoadWired bundle.
4. Chris Ellsworth's Space Entry
Alright... here's my workspace. I'll start with the obvious: My Power Mac G4 is connected to the Apple Studio Display on the right, and my Dell Dimension 4600 is connected to the Samsung display (which is also my TV) on the left. I prefer to use the Mac, but the PC is needed for compatibility. Some of the visible peripherals are the Logitech MX500 mouse, the Griffin PowerMate, and the LaCie d2 FireWire hard drive (all of which are connected to the Mac). The items sitting on the table to the right include my cell phone (Sony Ericsson T300), Palm (IIIe Special Edition), CB scanner, and a few remote controls.
I'm kind of a neat freak - I keep the top of my desk nice and clean, but I have a mess of cables underneath it. There are cables going to two computers, two power strips and an APC battery backup. I'm still looking for a good cable management solution.

On the desk you can see a customer build full-tower computer. This computer is running Windows XP and has the following components:
Plextor 48X CD burner, Sony 4x DVD burner, Creative Labs 16x DVD drive, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy sound card (you can see the Audigy drive on the front of the computer), 512 MB RAM, 2.4 P4, and 100 GB hard drive). The mini-tower computer to the left is a Dell Dimension L800r used as a Windows 2000 Domain Controller. On the desk top is a Dell Axim X5 PocketPC and foldable keyboard, a Jabra Bluetooth headset, two 256 MB USB flash drives, a card pack containing 3 SD cards for the Axim and a USB-SD card adaptor. In addition, there is also a Belkin OmniView KVM switch and one of the 6 speakers from the Creative Inspire 5.1 surround speaker set. The Microsoft Multimedia Natural keyboard and Logitech Cordless TrackMan® FX trackball is visible.
The shelf to the left of the full-tower there are two remote controls, one for the Audigy card and one for the speakers. There is also a USB Zip drive (which is not used that much).
The shelf above the desk contains a Belkin DSL/Cable Gateway Router, DSL modem and 3COM WiFi access point. To the right of the 19” monitor the control/amplifier for the speakers is visible along with another one of the speakers. There is also a speaker on top of the monitor.
Below the desk is the 10” subwoofer for the speaker set. The other two speakers are placed further to the left and right of the desk.
To the far right are two printers, one Lexmark Z-22 and one HP LaserJet 1200. In the same cabinet there is a 13” TV.
On the table to the left of the desk is a HP ScanJet 6200c flatbed scanner, a Motorola V60 cell phone, a Seidio powered GPS mount for the Axim. The shelf above the table contains software, blank DVDs and the other WiFi access point (LinkSys).

My name is Brian, and my desk site is VERY sloppy. In fact, it's so sloppy, that my friend was sleeping over, and he got so annoyed with the lack of cleanliness, he spent an hour cleaning it, and it was like this again two weeks later! Well, here I sit typing this on my generic barebones-kit PC running Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official, on a keyboard so cheap that doesn't even have a brand name on it, with a foosball table behind me. And that other picture with all of the cables, that's supposed to be there. Well, except for the N64 controller, but that doesn't make much difference.

This is my Home setup. Where I love to work… If only I had three more walls around it I would be set…
It sits on the end of the great room in my house where I rarely get quiet time. This Large (And very heavy) desk is solid wood. A Lot of storage (2 shelves above were cut- off in the picture).
To start with the most obvious is the triple headed monitor… Once you get used to working with three monitors it is painful going back to one, especially for web development. They are run by an HP Pavillion (one of those $600 deals), but cranked up with 512k memory and an added 120 gig hard drive and 2 more video cards.
My laptop is an original gateway 200 (Before the CD Drives were built in). It goes back and forth to work with me and I use it mainly for my email (send, receive store) It is always connected via a sprint PCS aircard or by wifi either at home or at work... I really love this laptop because it’s so thin and lightweight.
The PDA in the picture is actually my old Palm 515 that my 6 year old son uses. I use a Tungsten T but I left it at my office desk at work. (Which is like a portable toilet compared to my home-office).
I also regularly use my Tablet PC. This follows me everywhere… Couch, Store, Outside, Bathroom, Bed. I use it mainly to surf the web, read emails. And personal writing (Notes, To-do’s, thoughts etc…..).
The Phone is the Nextel i830… Nice phone, But I can’t wait for the i930.
The keyboard and mouse is the Logitech wireless optical series….. LOVE IT!!!
I have 2 printers, On the left is the HP 7550, used to print pictures and all the colorful stuff. The p1000 is usually out of color ink, I use it mostly for printing black and white.
Between the printers is the Cano-scan lide 50. It picked this scanner because its power comes from USB and not another wall-wart. It’s fairly quick, works for what I need it for.
Well, that’s my “Main” work-space… It was hard to decide which I should choose; I actually have 3 areas in my house to hide when I really need quiet. But this space is the most comfortable and enjoyable place for me to work plus my closet was a total mess.

I am an amateur photographer so my office doubles as a home photo studio. The work space was constructed entirely by my husband. He built all of the lower cabinets by hand and I painted them white. We bought the counter top sections and the upper cabinets from our local home supply store. I am in the process of building a house so taking what I see here I hope to improve it greatly in the next house. I already have the Cat 5 cable piped for the wireless network in the new house design. As you can see I added inexpensive shelves across the top for added holding capacity for gadgets , chargers etc.

So, here's my space, cramped and messy. Apologies for the poor picture quality. I couldn't find my good digicam, so I had to use my older one. In this pic, you can see (starting from the left): Left Channel speaker for my stereo, my Motorola C331G cell phone, my iPAQ 1945 in a Belkin leather case, a highlighter and pen, my laptop (IBM Thinkpad x20, with DVD/FDD sled attached), Logitech Marble USB Mouse, and the control for my TV. Above the laptop, you see a mess of wires and peripherals (somewhere in there is a set of headphones for my ipaq, my SD card reader, and 3 AOL Cd Tins I use for CD caddies. To the right of that mess, you see a stack of books, currently, "Light for My Path: Illuminating Selections from the Bible," "The Faith of George W. Bush" by Stephen Mansfield, and one of my Holy Bibles (this one is my NIV Refrence UltraThin), all atop a pack of notebook paper. To the right of that is a cup of pens, a flashlight, and a scissors. Behind my laptop is the latest issue of MacAddict magazine (and I'm not even a mac user, alas), the control to my stereo, a pocket knife (emphasize the "k"), my Zire 71 and original stowaway (PUC version), and a sync-charge cable for the Zire. Below my laptop, you see the slide-out keyboard tray (I have been meaning to get a USB-PS/2 adapter, but alas), that's been converted to a junk drawer of sorts. Below that is my printer, an HP Deskjet 3322 I hardly use (mainly for printing out reports--ebay is a great place to get cheap ink cartridges, btw), my external USB 2.0 CD-RW drive and my stereo. To the right of my desk is my Right channel to my stereo, and a 3-drawer "organizer" with nothing but junk in it--I am such a packrat, you should see my closet, but that's another contest...

I'm a biomedical/chemical engineer, and this is my workspace. The Fisher Hamilton fume hood pictured above is used for making cast elastomer polyurethanes for tissue engineering scaffolds. Featured in this picture are, from left to right, a pair of heavy-duty green nitrile gloves (isocyanates eat through latex a bit too easily), a 20GB iPod with standard iPod headphones, a Fisher Scientific hotplate/stirplate with a 100 mL 3-neck flask reactor sitting in an oilbath and hooked up to a vertical shaft mechanical stirrer (no wimpy magnetic stir bars for me!), a 2001 dual-USB iBook with after-market attached "Tote-n-Tilt" handle by Cyber3, A Fluke temperature sensor/recorder, and an acetone wash bottle. Behind the iBook is the waste tray. On the 3-neck reactor, from left to right, an argon gas inlet, the stirring shaft adaptor, and an Allihn condensor with the argon outlet at the top. Outside the hood, on the benchtop to the right, is a vacuum oven we use to dry glassware and cure polymers, and the big blue thing on the far right is the argon cylinder. And, just to prove that I really do work like this...

First off, forgive me for the horrid image quality, I’m using my JB1 digicam, because, to be frank, I don’t want to go and find the Canon Powershot G2 that’s lurking somewhere in the house. Anyway, pictured, from left to right are: Arbor Longboards Bomber 45”, Empty case that used to hold a dual-PII 450 MHz fileserv, Dell Inspiron 8600 1.5 GHz Pentium M (128 MB Radeon 9600, 512 MB DDR, 15.4” display, etc), Panasonic SA-PM11 shelf system, Hitatchi CM771 19” monitor, Motorola v60i. Also on my desk, but invisible thanks to the oversaturation of the picture are, so you’ll just have to take my word on it are a Leatherman Micra and a Cassiopea E-200 with 1 GB microdrive. Oh, and also not pictured because the right speaker blocks them are a cable modem and a Netgear 802.11b router/switch/AP.

How do you people get _anything_ done in those empty, sterile workspaces? :)
The mess you see here is 3 machines, none of which amount to anything, the "fast" one is a 500mHz Celeron. Under the pile on the desk are several handheld game platforms, Nintendo, Sega, Atari, stuff like that. The fridge is full of drinks and grapes, sound is Ozric Tenticles, the game loaded is Tribes (the screen is switched to the machine viewing The Gadgeteer webpage). What you can't see in this image is that all of this (and much, much more) are located on the second floor... the first being under the "no computers" house rule (there's pizza in the oven by the way :)

5) Below the desk is an ancient PII Linux machine originally intended to be a router/firewall, but never fully set up.
On the desk (L to R):
1) Treo 600 (Sprint) in cradle
2) Macally iceKey keyboard

My home office is very important to my productivity and I have mine set up just right. The table on the left has my latest pride and joy- the Sony U-70, included keyboard, and a Sony CDRW/DVD drive. Moving to the desk on the right is the following (from L - R):
Canon i70 portable printer. This printer works so well it's currently my only printer! It has the optional battery pack attached.
Toshiba e805. I heart VGA!
Compaq X1015 laptop. 1 GB memory, Pentium M 1.5 GHZ, 80 GB HDD. 15.4" widescreen display. It propped up on a Lapdesk combination lapdesk and laptop stand which is very handy (I have 2). The antenna sticking out on the left is the Sierra Aircard 555 which attaches to the Verizon Express Network when WiFi is not available. Connectivity to email is crucial to me and this works great.
The 2nd screen is a 17" LCD that is attached to the laptop when it's home. The laptop has an ATI Mobility video processor that makes dual monitors plug and play. It's wonderful having a dual head setup to work with.
The little guy on the right is Rambo- my Aibo. He's a 220A I got for Xmas last year and he has a mind of his own. He's a lot of fun to just let run around for hours while I'm working away and helps me from getting too involved in work. :-)

There's nothing very special about my space, except maybe that its MY space, well technically that's not true either, I kinda SHARE it with my 18 month old daughter Gabbie. i doubt if I'll win anything but the spaces submitted are very ineresting. Like a little bit of your personality rubbing off on your individual space.
So here's the description: From the bottom left: My most important gadget, my backscratcher(not cutting edge at all...), iriver slimline cdmp3 player, watch, logitech cordless keyboard and mouse, multi card reader, rotring pen, t68i, nx80,creative webcam, altec lansing speakers, epson c61 printer, other personal stuff from me and my daughter's sponge bob figure.
Oh, the computer's a 2.4Ghz, 512mb ram, invidia mx440 video, creative soundcard, with a 60gig HD and an external 80gig HD connected to a DSL modem.

Here it is!
-The speakers that you see are Klipsch and there is a subwoofer under the desk.
-There's my phone that I call world leaders and celebrities on (though its been a while due to the the pending court order).
-My 15 gig iPod is my pride and joy (it's the only thing I have that doesn't take more than five minutes to open something).
-As you can see, I have an iBook, G3, I might add. I've become a power user since I bought a year ago and it keeps getting slower and s l o w e r. But I can still do a good amount of programing.
-Now to my lamp.......and that's pretty much all there is to say about that.
-I have a couple of insignificant things on the right: stack o' paper, case of blank CDs, writing utensils and that little clip thingy holding the CD, doesn't it look coool!!! (three o's means it's extra cool) (same goes for the amount of exclamation marks).

Description:
Here's where I spend far too much time. As it's my one-for-all room you'll find both my PC/PDA and my Music setup there. Apart from my WiFi router, some smaller gadgets like and my Canon PowerShot G3 you can find all my toys in the picture. I added numers for each gadget to make indentifying the devices more easy. The desk itself is very personal as I designed and crafted it myself :-) Of course, my Mini PC - I call it "Biscuit Box" - is custom made, too. Packed with a P4HT, DVD+/-RW, tv tuner and 200 GB storage for tunes and videos.
23. Valerie Beeby's Space Entry
This is my eyrie at Treetop Cottage. When I look up from my computer over the trees I can just see the aircraft taking off and landing in the far distance at London Heathrow airport.
I stand my handheld gadgets in whiskey glasses in case I knock over a mug of coffee any time. (I had a Russian portable tv once that had a large label on it saying "Fears dampness!")
I've worked at these garden tables for years, and they just happened to go nicely with my iMac. The hole in the middle for an umbrella is useful for feeding up the leads to my Treo and Nokia 6600. (The stuffed dragon, a gift from Barcelona, sits on the cables when they aren't plugged in to prevent them from slipping back down the hole.)
I've just got the Powerbook 15" and splashed out on an Airport Extreme so now I can get my email and surf the net anywhere in the house. Another new gadget is the EyeTV receiver/recorder which gives simply wonderful tv pictures on my Powerbook.
