I'm VERY sorry to report that my message forum software (UBB) decided to totally delete this whole forum for no apparent reason. We lost over a hundred (maybe it was 200) comments.

Well, since I can't tell whether this was already posted, here we go:

On the III/VII/m100 keyboard, aren't supposed to just let the support thing spring up, instead of pushing it down? Maybe Palm redid it a bit with the Palm Portable Keyboard for III/VII/m100 I have.

P.S. I find that on my keyboard, it kind of looks like there is a narrow "connection" between my m100 and the keyboard.

Ever heard about backing data!!??

As you can see, even after several months, hardly anyone else has bothered to add their comments...Making this forum REALLY useful.

I've just come back again, because I was disturbed by my own comment. Sure, I was angry at there being no back-up to maintain this resource but it's a minor criticism, given that I'v benefitted from a lot of excellent reviews on this site.

Sorry for criticising your hard work!(But please try to keep backups ;-)

The first thing that I did when I found out that the forum had been corrupted/deleted was to send an email to my webhost asking them to restore that directory. At that point, I found out that they only keep a daily backup for emergency purposes and that the forum had been mucked up BEFORE that backup had been run. So, I was out of luck.

Since then, I have written my own backup script and do a backup of the entire message base every day.

Very nice keyboard. I have owned a GoType and, now this model. While both have their advantages, this one's small size makes it a really essential piece.

What device are you using with the keyboard, and how do you have the network connection set up?

Does anyone know if the version of the Stowaway folding keyboard designed for the PalmIII, m100, etc will fit with the PalmPilot Professional? (and all the others of the same era). The electrical connectors are the same as is evident from the large number of other accessories that work with both PalmPilot and PalmIII. As far as I can see, the only possible explanations are that either something about the bottom end of the PalmPilot obstructs a proper fit (as is the case with trying to use a PalmPilot with a PalmIII cradle) or, alteratively, Palm Inc has decided not to include older models in compatibility tests so that their faithful, first-adopter owners are conned into buying their expensive newer models! If I am being cynical, and older models really do not fit then how about using a Bridge (from http://www.midwestpcbdesigns.com/bridge.htm) to get round the problem? Many thanks in advance if someone can help

It should fit just fine as the connectors are very similar. The only thing I am not sure about is if the driver will work with the older version of the OS on the PalmPro.

Thanks for the rapid response. Your suggestion that it might be the software that is incompatible with pre-PalmIII machines led me to search the Palm.com website for the keyword 'drivers' rather than 'keyboard' (which had been of no help). And sure enough, I found a page (http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/keyboard_legal.html) of links for downloading drivers, with a specific link for PalmPilot Professional and Personal users, to the 1.2 version of the driver. I've just received the P10713U model from Amazon.co.uk, listed on the box as compatible only with m100, III and VII, and it fits my Professional perfectly!

The connection is very secure and the pop-out stand holds it at the right angle. The characters appear on screen with a small lag, about 1 or 2 seconds between typing the end of a sentence and the full stop appearing on screen. But, not having seen the PalmIII version of the driver in action, I wouldn't know if that is significantly faster. It is still a vast improvement on Graffiti (at which I consider myself to be a bit of a whizz ;-) or even what I recall of a demo of the GoType I tried in 1999. I love the feel of the keyboard - the closest comparison I can think of are the old Powerbook keyboards. Nowhere near as good as my 1997-vintage ThinkPad but it feels much less fragile than those horrible iBooks. A great piece of kit, but why did they screw up the compatibility list? It's not as if they just forgot to test it before having the associated media printed as pre-PalmIII compatibility is even a question on the FAQ page of the shrink-wrapped manual!!! Fat lot of good that is when you are thinking about buying it.

One suggestion I have for anyone out there with the talent to write PalmOS software: how about a driver that uses the half keyboard concept (http://www.halfkeyboard.com/) on the left half of a folding keyboard? That might be a good emergency fix for the problem of needing a flat surface to type on.

Thanks again for your help, and for providing a very useful website :-))

I have a question. I went out and bought the WONDERFUL Handspring Visor Edge, and the Targus Stowaway keyboard. Well I get back home and am looking at everything and it all seems perfect except....my Visor Edge (doesn't) fit my keyboard! It says it fits Visors, but does that mean ONLY Visors, and not Visor Edge, Prism, etc.? And since the connector on the keyboard is a lot smaller than on my Visor Edge, no possible way of hooking the two together, is there another keyboard that I need to get? If so which one? Can anyone help me out!!! Thanks for your time, I've looked and tried to find out for myself but got nowhere. I hope you can shed some light on this for me. Thanks again.

Right now, I don't believe that there is any Visor Edge specific keyboard available. I have heard that ThinkOutside (makers of the Stowaway) will be coming out with one sometime soon though...

I use my Stowaway daily with both a Palm m105 and Palm III. I noticed that the keyboard had the annoying tendency to bounce at the center hinge. After trying mats and notebooks, etc. under it I found a solution. First, note that the rubber bumpers built in to the corners of the keyboard are quite small. What I did was to affix thicker foam-rubber pads next to the built in pads. This raised up the edges of the keyboard, forcing the center to lay flat. I haven't had any bouncing since. Try it! You'll see.

Have you thought about making this keyboard interface with the RIM Blackberry? The Blackberry is quickly gaining ground as an Enterprise solution and I'm wondering if someone will make a keyboard to work with it.

Does it actually work to use a stowaway, a visor, and a visorphone as a dialup-terminal?

Limited usefulness without being able to select entries...

This keyboard isn't as useful as I'd like, given that you can't select entries. Having to pick up and put down the stylus all the time really cuts down on efficiency, it's worse than using a mouse.

The keyboard is great, but this really seems like a big oversight. Am I missing something?

Hooray! I was wrong!

There's a new driver that will allow you to pop up a cursor you can use to select entries, menu items, etc.

absolutely brilliant wonderful - even "super, smashing, lovely"!!

i read your previous and was just going to say i have 3rd party software that provides this functionality by asigning a number to menu items but your solution is much better and a great reminder to check back regularly that you have the latest driver for ALL your hardware.

now in return may i suggest you have a look at pop! hack from http://digitalglyph.com/

if not may i suggest that you give it a try. it stores your favourite words, phrases or whole paragraphs (and perhaps most usefuly <todays date> in a choice of formats) all accessible very easily from a pop-up menu. although it takes more than one tap to select the text you want to enter it is still very quick i use it frequently to enter the names of people work with and it saves me lots of time and more impotantly irritation.

unfortunately it's utterly brilliantly useful but needs the stylus and can't be operated from the keyboard - unless you know different!! - i'm just off to look for new version that does!!

I read your reply of the Stowaway keyboard and it seems very useful, I want to get one for my Palm V, problem is, I live in Sweden, and noone sells it around here, however, a friend of mine is going to the Dallas area next week, do you know of any store there that holds the keyboard? Buying from amazon doesn't seem like a working way....

I just had a small disaster: after many happy years and hours of using my Palm IIIx, it was 'catted', and died... I still have my wonderful keyboard, and I'm trying to decide what compatible new palms OR Handsprings it will work with. I'm partial to Handspring, but I don't want to replace my keyboard... any help would be appreciated.

Hey, does anyone know if a m100 portable keybpard is compatible with the m130. Or is there any other way I can use a m100 compatible keyboard with my m130. Is there any hack available to do it.

does anyone know if the keyboard made for Palm III, VII, m100, and m105, works for the m125? I am thinking about getting one but I want to make sure it will work. Thanks.

P.S. it is model #P10713U, if that means anything.
