This same pen was reviewed some time ago by Julie (in the black matte finish, which I prefer). Nothing has changed, either in appearance or function. I am thus wondering why it was reviewed again.

Philippe,

No, this is an totally different stylus.
I know, I sent it to Judie to review.

Yes, I think I see that now. This is not really the Quattro Data: it is a four element pen where one of the pen cartridges - the red one - was replaced by a stylus by the dealer rather than Rotring. You don't need a dealer to do that. You just buy the stylus insert, which is the same size as the ballpoint cartridge, and you will save on the price. I just checked with my pen purveyor and, to their knowledge, Rotring makes only one stylus pen, the Quattro Data, which you reviewed previously. One other note: Judie is not using the highlighter correctly. It is not an underliner, it is designed to strike through words: it works very well (the words remain readable), except that the ink beads too much.

I have the matt black Quattro, which is just great. I swapped the highlighter for a red ball point, as I am an engineer and redline and comment on paper drawings. The highlighter si no good for writing.
The only fault with the pen is that the pencil leads always break. I think this is a combination of the pencil mechanism being bent slightly when extended out of the pen barrel and the constant snapping back of the individual pen/pencils when changing between pens. The leads aren't that strong.
BTW the matt black finish doesn't like being rubbed against metal such as keys in your pocket. However just rub the finish with your fingers and it covers the scratches again. A self healing pen!

Philippe,

Thank you very much for taking the time to read & comment upon my review of the Rotring Quattro Executive Multi-pen.

When comparing this pen to the Rotring Quattro Data Multi-pen that Julie reviewed, you will see that they are actually quite different. Yes, they both are of the same function, in that they have four tips. They are also both available in silver & matte black. However, they are otherwise designed quite differently.

With the data pen, you push a button on the pocket-clip to retract the nibs. The Executive retracts by pushing on the entire end of the wide pocket-clip, similar to a see-saw. Once this is done, the tip retracts. As I stated in my review, this is to protect your shirt from an extended tip marking.

I realize that it would be easy, considering the darkness of Julie's picture (being that the pen itself is so dark), and the shininess of the pictures of the pen that I reviewed (making it near impossible to really appreciate the pens' unique differences), that perhaps this feature was not so easily distinguishable.

If you will go to http://www.styluscentral.com/rotquatdat.html , you will see a very clear picture of the Rotring Data pen, available from Stylus Central for $39.99.

If you will then look at http://www.styluscentral.com/rotquatex.html , you will see a picture of the Executive for $59.95.

As you will then understand after you have done this, the pens actually look nothing alike, and they are in fact entirely different - other than their shared basic functions.

I realize that part of your point was that there is only one "official" data pen put out by Rotring. That may well be the case.

My take on this is very simple. Because Stylus Central is in the business of making styli available to the paying public, they are the first to understand that people have different tastes and opinions. They are in fact making a wide array of choices available for we, the fickle public. I can't fault them for that - in fact, I appreciate it and commend them for that decision. If someone chooses to purchase a pen that they have modified into a stylus, then Stylus Central has made a sound business decision that resulted in yet another sale. Capitalism - you've gotta love it! :0)

As for the way that I use the highlighter tip, well that is certainly a matter of personal preference, and this is how I prefer to use it. I am happy that the way you use it works so well for you.

I always enjoy the colorful feedback that Julie's site gathers - It's what makes the Gadgeteer such an enjoyable and unpredictable site to peruse.

Have a great day!!

I'm using a Rotring 600 series tri-pen with a stylus insert. One of the things that I've noticed lately (after months of using the pen) is that it makes a particularly loud rattling noise when all of the tips are retracted.

I'm certain this rattling noise has to do with the "gravity" selection mechanism, and indeed, the rattle goes away once a tip has been extended. Whether this rattling is something that has always been prevalent in the pen, or something that I just noticed recently (and have been obsessing about) is another story.

I recall seeing a comment about the loudness of certain multipens (Rotring in particular) in reviews here before.

Are the Quattro Executive/Quattro Data noisy when the tips are retracted?

Dave,
It's not your imagination - the Rotring pens are usually noisy when the tips are retracted, however, every other brand I've ever used is the same way. I think that it is just part of the nature of a multi-pen.
Hope that helps you,

I did not mean to state that your use of the highlighter was somehow misguided. I simply wanted to stress that this point - which uses luminescent ink - is designed as a strike-through pen, just like other (mostly felt-tipped) highlighters. How you use it is of course up to you. BTW, what Stylus Central does could just as well be read as dishonest since it is trumpeting as genuine Rotring something never made by them. For your information, I own a Rotring Executive, but it did not dawn on me that the one I owned was the one under review since that one has no stylus.

I have a rotring quattro and I find it not as good as my cross, pentel (and years ago)the old Norma multi color pencil.
The sleeve on my quattro is loose and the 0.5 MM pencil is broke.
I wrote Rotring a year ago trying to get a replacement part (0.5MM pencil mechanism).
They have not replied.
In the past 37 years of Drafting and Engineering I have had 1 problem with Cross and 1 with Pentel and in both cases they responded quickly and fairly-I wouldn't recommend Rotring to anyone.

I have owned this pen for over a year now. My only source of frustration is that due to the highly polished finish of the pen, it is very difficult to get a good grip on the pen, particularly when writing for long periods of time.

Rotring should have made the grip a lot more "sticky".

Is there any way to overcome this? I am considering purchasing a new pen if I cannot resolve this.
