Owner Comments on the TRG's SP II-XL 8meb Board Review
10/21/00

Hi there,

Just bought this board for a Professional - price now down to $149.
Fantastic - old Palm Pro is now effectively a Palm IIIxe minus IR (which I
don't really need anyway). Comes with OS3.0 loaded but upgraded to 3.3 no
problem.

Installation just too easy on the Pro. Slip off memory door, click old out,
new in. Finished in one minute.

(Reason for doing this and not buying Palm III is investment in a fleet of
accessories including three cradles for three modified Newton keyboards.)

Only hassle has been that hotsync times are much longer - takes about 20-30
secs just to identify user. Not sure what's going on here, but hotsync works
fine in the end.

Only other hassle is that TRG are taking their sweet time to send the free
FlashPro software they offer. (This is very primitive - shipped with a
letter that gives a serial number, this fed into a web page, software then
emailed!!)

Have filled it with everything I own, including two novels at 1Mb each,
still got 2Mb to fill!!

Just looked into this a little. Great review! Love the detail and the
photos! It appears that TRG has cut the price in half for this option
Down to $149.

If I am reading this correctly, you may want to add a note to your
review to reflect this change...

Thanks again!

Julie, I agree with everything everyone else has said.  I have just a
couple of things to add.  1) I had a great deal of trouble getting two
of the four screws out that held my case together.  They were very tight
and I came close to stripping two of them.  I used one of the little
screw drivers you show in your article.  I would recommend using a screw
driver with a bigger handle.  2) The issue with downloading the ROM is
no longer an issue.  TRW has signed a licencing agreement with 3COM and
the board now comes with the ROM preloaded.  Of course that happened the
week after I installed mine. 3)One needs to be very careful about what
one loads into the flash ram.  I wasn't and had to reload all my
software from scratch (no big problem since I use Backup Buddy).

I am very pleased with the product and highly recommend it.

I've had my board in now for about 2 months. I utilize a lot of diagrams and databases in my job. The 8 megs were absolutely essential! I currently have 3 megs in diagrams alone and almost 1 meg of database info stored. With all my applications included, I have virtually 6 megs fully utilized on my Palm Pro. This board has been worth every penny. I've been on 5 business trips and have needed my laptop only once for things not able to be stored on my palm pilot. There are two other places I get significant slowdowns other that loading the applications screen. That is when do a memory check and it lists all my applications and the memory size. The other is when I do a defrag!!!! This takes a while! Otherwise, what an awesome addition to the palm pilot's power.

Right on the money, except I'd modify one tiny item:  There's no native
Mac support, but the application seems to work okay with VirtualPC 2.x.
This is an important distinction, since a lot of Mac users have bought
this emulation package, and it may make the difference.

Keep up the good work,

As for battery life, I get about a month out of my batteries.  I would
categorize my use as excessive......I am a Pilot addict.
