Hi Julie....

I am a fan of the Nintendo Gameboy. I have both the original and the new GameBoy Color. The new color GameBoy is so much better than the original, of course. I am dissapointed in the speed, though. I know the GameBoy Color has 2 processor modes, but lets face it, microprocessor technology is ahead of its time.

You would expect the new GameBoy to have more than 8 MHz. As small as CPUs are these days and with as many transistors they can hold, why not? Wait for future version of the GameBoy Color to come out with greater power and screen, as well as enhanced screen resolution.

Hi!

My name is Marko and I have bought my Color GameBoy today.

It is really great! The screen is sharp, but I couldn't play

it in a darker room. I can just say: IT IS GREAT!

HI there,

The Gameboy Color is truly excellent, I just got mine today (I waited for
the Pok'emon edition to be released here). I have seen a few comments about
the backlights, yes this would have been awesome but you have to weigh up
the problems associated with a backlight from Nintendos perspective, It uses
up battery power (not much but still it drains your 2 batteries) and if the
lights get damaged somehow or they burn out then you would have to replace
them which means getting into your gbc. and just look at those screws (plus
youl probably void your warranty and so on) I personally like the look of
the Neko "Worm Light". (Oh yeh you guys have polly seen the limited ed jap
backlit gb's.. but they are soo expensive compared)

I just have 1 gripe/question about the GBC's sound, it sounds sooooo
queit... I was just wondering is it just me or does everyone have a low
sounding gbc at full sound? Other than that I love it!

Thanks
Andrew

Hello my name is peter. My friends have game boy colors and they are the
best. yes the advantage is that the screen is color and it runs on cheaper
AA batteries. there are also many new addons for the gameboy. Personally Im
waiting for a marble madness to come out on gbc, that should be pretty cool.
I also like the facts that most games exclusively for color are 2player. Did
you know that the gameboy color is actually faster than a Nintendo. yes the
system is almost a duplicate of the nes but has faster video speed. I think
that if sega could reintroduce some new titles to their gamegear, that would
be the best. Sega had the upper hand, but they dropped it like idiots. if
they could get back into the hand-held gaming industry, they would make
millions. I am not to big of a fan with the dream cast because in may it
will be out done by the psx2, and even playstation has a piece of junk psx
portable version. soon dolphin will out do everything. there are also
rumors of a gameboy 2, which will have a backlit screen and a 16 bit
processor.

Hi,

I haven't had my Color GB for long, but I tell you what I traded in my Game Gear for it the day it came out!! I bought it with a Game boy Color game and it works great! My only problem is the screen, it would have benefited with a backlight or Nintendo should have released a clip on light and magnifier when it came out. But overall it is amazing.

11/10 for Nintendo

See Ya!

Hey I don't have a return e-mail sorry but just a little comment I noticed with my new Color game boy that I Love! I agreed with the eject cartridge button you suggested but for some time I couldn't quite figure out what I felt odd about the volume controls..then i got it ...The wheel rotates on the side of the game boy differently than the old game boy....You have to rotate it up to get loud and down to get soft..I always turn my game up and it went dead and i have to remember to turn it down. It's gotten on my nerves a few times because i was used to rotating down to get the volume up louder....well ...I'm picky ;) anyway just bored and letting ya know my comments...

I'm 23 and am a fanatic for gameboys. I have a gameboy, a gameboy pocket
and now a gameboy color. Completely in love with it and find it hard to
let it go to go to bed or to work.

I agree completely with your review, as for the quality of the old
games, they play excellently with the new gameboy, I tried out a few and
was very pleased. One of them that played the best was Donkey Kong (the
classic). It's a pity that the screen isn't as big as the gameboy
pocket, but the color overcomes all that.

Best Wishes

I agree with most of your review. I simply want to say that in my opinion playing with the GBC doesn't need a lot of light at all. I play with the Gameboy in all places, never had problems seeing things. The reflective display is real good.

A matter of fact, I happen to have a new gbc and I am very satisfy with it. I
am glad that you mention it about the game pullout and the light source as the
disadvantage of the gbc.  I happen to bought 3 gameboy lights with magnifier,
and I am very disatisfy with all three of them.  I just wanted to wait until
the new light source for gbc.  It could be great.  Please feel free to email
me back.

I am very appreciate for your effort on the gbc review your wrote on color
gameboy, but please improve those screenshot. Because it really not even close
to what the resolution and the color of the gameboy color.  If you need some
pics then go to the nintendo.www  website.

Thanks,
johnny quest.

I agree Julie. I am a 36 year old games freak and I haven't stopped
using my new toy since I got it a week ago. The colours are brilliant
with the dedicated games, but I WISH they had backlit it. Highly
recommended game: Quest for Camelot. Really brilliant!

Hi well i like your review on the game boy colour, I AM 14  i have a
gameboy colour unit, and i am inlove with it. i have one of those original
gameboys and i hate it  don't even like the pocket now colours come out.
the screen is so sharp and clear. I have 2 games not designed for colour
they are quite good, but i just bought one gameboy colour game(warioland 2)
it is brilliant
oh well see ya!

To fan of Gameboy Color,
I agree with you completely. I thought it was amazing when they introduced super game boy for my super Nintendo so that i could play my games on the telly but now that I have gameboy color and can play color anywhere I find myself spending alot more time playing my Gameboy. Also I would just like to state that when I became addicted to pokemon that I must have spent around 10 hours the first time i played all the way through and then my batteries held out until I had beaten it again. Truly this portable system does not waste batteries.

I just got my color gameboy maybe a week ago. The only game i really love for it (partially because it's the game I have) is Pokemon!!! I am 13 years old and have had an old gameboy and my sister owns a gameboy pocket. Although I don't agree that it has to be used in a well lit room (because I use it alot at school, behind various objects that block light) I love your review and LOVE the COLOR GameBoy!!

Hi Julie,
I agree with all you say but would add this; with Tetris when you hit 50
lines the background color changes to purple which makes it nearly
impossible to see, well lit room or not.

I bought a Gameboy Color from EBWorld.com, and it is amazing.
Game Gear fans eat your heart out. Most frequently heard complaint:
"it's not backlit". The pros seriously outweigh the few cons. Tetris DX
is a hit, but not because it's in color. New ways of scoring points, and it
remembers up to 3 players' stats. All in all, even with old games (which i most
frequently turn into black and white (by pressing left-B when i turn it on), the Gameboy
Color is a definite hit. And Nintendo will make some sort of 10th anniversary one
next year..

Oh two more things:
1. why did the people at 3Com never use a color screen on the PalmPilot?
2. Duracell Ultra batteries come only in AA, and the GB Color uses these...hint.

It is the bomb.

The new GBC really kicks bootie. I have been a gameboy junkie for years and
think its great that Nintendo keeps improving on an excellent product. I agree
that a backlit screen would of been a great idea, but I'm sure some corporate
ding dong down the food chain thought that was a bad idea, FIRE THAT
GUY.!!!!!!!!!  I found a major improvement in my Donkey Kong, Galaga, and World
cup soccer games ( you can see the little players eyes bulge out now when you
trip them  :)  ).

Hello,

I enjoyed reading your review of the Game Boy Color.  I have had one
for about two weeks, and am also quite impressed with the color
screen.

You mentioned in the review that there has been some complaint from
users over the ON/OFF switch being positioned on the right side of the
unit.  I don't think that the problem is with the switch itself, but
from its location being moved.  If other gbc users are like me, one
habitually tries to turn the unit on and off at the top of the display
-- where it has been on all prior gameboy models.  I find I'm
frequently running my index finger over the IR port to turn the gbc on
& off.

I wrote earlier in the comments. Anyways, I recently obtained a copy of
Tetris DX. And what a delight it was! The game is so colorful and the
graphics are so crisp/sharp. I was certainly amazed with the Intro Screen
with the green thingies in the background scrolling!

Well, I was about to pick up a copy of Zelda DX at Toys R Us but I chose
Tetris DX instead. I'll be getting Zelda DX later on. Toys R Us has a LOT
of gameboy color games! Zelda DX, Mortal Combat 4 and a few other "good
ones" were hidden away in a different section.

Another thing that amazed me ... If you leave the Tetris DX on the main
screen, a "mini screen saver" will load up and the graphics are
stunningly real and colorful! I will write back more when I get more
games!

I've actually had a Gameboy color since it came out about a month ago.
I've been using it moderately (an hour or so a day) & the batteries are
still going strong after a month.  The only issues I have with it are
the lack of a contrast dial (which makes it hard to see in some
situations) & the current lack of games.

I bought a copy of the new Tetris DX (in color) & I could barely put it
down.  The color makes it seems like it's a whole new game.  I had my
original Super Mario Land & Castlevania cartridges, and they play very
nicely with slight color added.  Basically, you have to look to notice
the colors.

Overall, it's an improvement & will be better when the new games are
out.

I got my color gb on the day it came out , and my first impressions were
satisfying. The screen is of a fair size, though not as big as pocket
gameboy, which i already had. I bought tetris dx with it, and was quite
surprised at how colorful the title screen was. The in game graphics were
ok, but too orangy. The next day i bought bomerman pocket, and it was
amazing, the colors were so bright and vibrant. The game is not like
previous bombermans ( like wario blast ) , but was a platform with
bomberman elements. I also bought harvest moon ( came out in the UK on 11
dec ) and that was good as well, but too easy because i achieved `ranch
master` on my second day, so I swapped it for bomberman. Overall i feel that
the color gameboy is very good , and when dedicated games come out, such as
san Francisco rush, it will dominate the hand held market.

I just got a gameboy color today. I stuck in the old Tetris, not DX. And
the color looks horrible! I don't have much money to spend on Gameboy
color games, but if i do get a game that is made for Gameboy Color, will
it look crisp and clear as you stated on your page? First when I heard of
it, i thought that the Gameboy Color would be like the "Game Gear"
screen, kind of like those portable handheld TVs, heh.

And Also, I wish that Nintendo should of made a backlight just like the
EL BackLight Gameboy, that way people can play it in the dark!

And I also wished that Nintendo make the view screen a little bigger!
It's not as big as Gameboy Pocket!!

Another thing, I'm not sure if Ninentdo is trying to "Falsely Advertise"
but the pictures in the advertisements look so good to be true! But when
I play it with the old regular Tetris, the colors are so dull and hard to
see! Maybe it's because I don't have a game that is dedicated to Gameboy
Color...

I was also hoping that Nintendo would release a 3D game for Gameboy Color
like Wolfenstien 3d or Doom! That would be really great...

I got my Game Boy Color the week it was released using the special
$30-off w/ old Game Boy trade-in deal at Electronic Boutique.  I
already had a library of about 20 Game Boy games, and since then, I've
picked up several of the color games.

I agree with you that the screen is great.  Its very easy to view in
high light conditions, although it doesn't do well in dark rooms.
Then again, neither does paper. <GRIN> At first, I didn't like the
feel of the joypad, but its loosened up with play and is now pretty
comfortable.

Game and Watch Gallery 2: a really fun twitch-fest, with both classic
and modern versions of Nintendo's early-1980's LCD games.  The modern
versions have nice animation and lots of colors, and the point-reward
system adds a lot to the game pak's life.

Bomberman Pocket: interesting, but it feels like it was quickly
converted to color, rather than being designed to use the color
screen.  Unlike standard Bomberman, this is a side scrolling game that
used the BM weapons.  It looks like it will be pretty short; jump
mode, an alternate game, is a bit of fun -- you have to deal with your
character's continual jumping.

Pokemon Blue: while not a color pak, I've had the most fun with this
cart.  You explore the world, fighting and capturing Pokemons, little
monsters that gain abilities as they train.  Supposedly, the real fun
is when you trade and fight other players, but its still a nice
one-player game.

Best old games with new colors:

Metroid II
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Land
Kirby's Pinball Land

I, too have recently purchased a gameboy color.  The BestBuy where I
purchased mine from only had purple units in stock.  Unlike yourself, I
had plenty of old gameboy cartridges to try - and I tried them all!  The
most important point to make after trying out all of my old games is
that I can finally play some of them!!!  The problem I was having with
some of the older games is what you called the blurring effect.  Some
games, like Techmo Bowl and Defender, moved to fast to see what was
going on and I would lose in a matter of seconds.  In Defender, for
example, the bad guys appeared as a blur on the screen and were
difficult to shoot.  I could never make it past level 1.  On the new
color unit, they can be seen easily and the game is finally fun to
play.  The complaint I think most folks might have using the old gameboy
cartridges on the new unit is color selection.  There is no way to
choose the palette that gets loaded.  So you find that most of the old
games will use a rust-looking orange as the main color (eg. Donkey
Kong).  Though this may not be the prettiest color in the world, you
will find that the new enjoyment in game play out-beats this one
unfortunate side-effect.  Also, for $69.95 (price at BestBuy in Texas),
the price for mobile gaming cant be beat (I have to admit that the games
are more fun than those on my PalmPilot).  Well, there is my two cents.
You get what you pay for :-)

C. Spooner

BTW - I think this screen technology would be perfect for the Palm (I
liked it better when I could call it the Pilot) if they could add some
backlighting.
