Owner Comments on the Casio E-11 Review
08/27/00

I guess that you won't be interested in this review now, as the E-11 is well past its sell by date. I bought mine late last year ex demo from PC World, Peterborough, England. No bonus software, but its still great, I loaded pocket streets onto it which was cool. But I've now upgrade to Pocket streets 2001 which is near perfect.
All in all I love it and it only cost me £70.

My first Palmtop was an Casio Cassiopeia E-11.  I had it for a couple days,
playing with it in my spare time, before I realized it did not include the
"Included Bonus Software" advertised right on the box.  Brought it back to
Circuit City (great company) and they gave me another one.  I opened it in
front of the manager and it too did not have the "Included Bonus Software".
But I took it home to try and get Casio to send me the "Included Bonus
Software".
Went to "Office Max", just to see and they opened one up for me and guess
what - no "Included Bonus Software."
So, I called (with my nickel because the 1-800 number is only for important
stuff), faxed as instructed, and e-mailed to be sure and guess what - I
still haven't got my "Included Bonus Software" in over 2 weeks.
So, guess where my Cassiopeia is going tomorrow - back to Circuit City (by
the way they have been great) where I'll get a Palm III.
Just a glitch, I'm sure but Casio, at least you could have called, e-mailed,
or faxed to inform me that your were at least trying to make me happy.

After many hours of research, I bought a Casio E-11 (my first
PSPC).  After spending a weekend learning the basic features, I put it
to work and have not had my Franklin Planner out since.  If I traveled
more, I would have wanted a notebook computer (primarily for accessing
databases and spreadsheets).  For those of us with lots of local
meetings and numerous "to do items", the Casio E-11 is a great way to
keep yourself organized. I particularly like the sharp display and
bundled software.  Harmony 98 makes it easy for me to keep in sync with
my Lotus Organizer schedule (although I cannot sync while the file is
open) and the ability to sync with my Lotus Notes e-mail is terrific.  I
can't wait until Lotus Notes Calendaring replaces our current system
early this year.  I'll be ready with Harmony 98 and the E-11.  The Jot
character recognition program is not slow at all (so long as you aren't
too absorbed in watching your pen strokes "magically" transformed into
clear text as you write).  Within days of receiving the E-11 I had
downloaded and installed several pieces of 3rd party software (all went
in without incident).  Standouts include Conversions In Hand (Burr Oak
Software) and bTask (bSquare Software).
For me, the PSPC and particularly the E-11 are a great way to go. As
for battery life, it's too soon to tell as the included batteries only
lasted about 7 hours, while a fresh set of energizers is still going
strong after 10+ hours. NiMH rechargeables may be in my future along
with a new case, a better stylus, a compact flash card (or maybe that
new 170/340MB IBM microdrive when available). Now about those WYVERN
color units.....hmmm....

Great review!  I love my E-11 especially the Pocket Map program from M$. It
is great to have it on road trips (which I just completed) to new and
unknown destinations. My only complaint is the loose stylus holder. It sux I
already lost my stylus and I have ordered a 3 stylus pack from Casio with
the screen protectors since I am now using a pen for navigation. Now if only
they would drop the price on the compact flash I would get some more ram for
my E-11. The modem for it seems a bit over priced also. But all in all I
love it. For the money there is no better palm sized PC.

Well I really liked the E-11 but sent it back due to the battery life
problem,  I went through three sets of batteries in about a week and  a
half!  I just couldn't live with that because I need to be able to use a
palm device for meetings since I travel a lot and don't like to take notes
on my laptop.  I didn't want to be stuck in a meeting with dead batteries.
There is some sort of problem with using backlighting on the Casio.  I think
the battery issue would be OK if you never used the backlighting but I could
not leave with that restriction.  I really liked the screen and I found Win
CE to be not so bad after all, at least with 8 MB of ram that is.  I looked
at other CE devices but the screens were awfully dim so I went back to the
Palm III.

I purchased an E-11 an was very happy with it but it went dead in about 45 days inexplicably. I called Casio support and ended up going through two weeks of Cassiopeia hell, talking to one person, then another who hadn't faintest idea about the first conversation, etc. Casio finally sent me a replacement (Staples where I bought it told me they couldn't help me after 30 days) roughly 2 weeks later when they told me it would show up in two days.

This comment is not a criticism of the unit but rather a condemnation of Casio customer support. I will not buy another Casio unit! I also wonder why the unit failed and am curious what the failure rate is. Also I think there may be a fair amount of variation between individual units.

Thanks for listening.

Much to my surprise I bought an E-11 after reading this review.  I didn't
care for the E-10 and sent one back.  This is much better.  I've been a Palm
pilot user for awhile but 3com seems to have lost their way and it is
doubtful to me that their new models will have the features of CE Palm
devices.  It is a little slower than my Palm III but you get used to it
quickly.  The compact flash upgrade is a major feature for me as is the
large quantity of included software.  From what I've seen CE devices like
this are slowly starting to be real competition for the Palm pilots.

I find the battery life a MAJOR drawback and using NiMh batteries is not
a solution with the E10 as the machine continually powers down while
there is 90% of the juice still in the battery, this happens
particularly when using the backlight.

I have got some Alkaline rechargables (AccuCell) that give out 1.5
volts, but its too early to give a view on these, but they look
promising

"I also found that the backlight on the E-10 is just a tiny bit brighter.
This difference is barely noticeable... "
It means ca. 20% longer battery life when backlite on!
